Almost a fortnight after he quit the Congress, where he was its Gujarat working president, influential Patidar leader Hardik Patel is all set to join the BJP in Gandhinagar on June 2. “It is confirmed that Hardik Patel will join the BJP on June 2 in the presence of state president C.R. Patil,” announced Gujarat BJP spokesperson Yagnesh Dave.
The 28-year-old Hardik, who bid goodbye to the Congress on May 18, had been sending feelers to the BJP for over a month. He praised the BJP’s policies and posted on social media a photograph of him wrapped in a saffron shawl. Hardik’s resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi itself had given indications of his next political destination—the BJP. “The Congress became an obstacle on several issues on which the country was demanding a solution. Whether it is the Shri Ram temple, Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens, Article 370 or GST, the Congress was an obstacle,” the letter stated.
