Following the death of an 11-year-old in the state’s Calicut district, Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja has appealed to the general public to maintain caution about Shigella. A Shigella virus outbreak is being reported from the northern part of Kerala.

This is not the first time that Shigella infection has been reported in the state and there have been similar reports in the past as well, Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja said.

“Usually these viruses spread through contaminated water. Hence, it is highly advised for people living in densely populated areas to use boiled water for drinking. Everybody must maintain caution and ensure proper hygiene” she added.
