Legendary music composer and National Award winner Mohammed Zahur Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, breathed his last on Monday night. He passed away at Sujay Hospital in Mumbai due to a lung infection and age-related illnesses. He was 92 years old.

“He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses. He died at Sujay Hospital at around 9.30 pm,” a family friend informed news agency PTI.

Khayyam, who started his career at the young age of 17, started his Bollywood journey as Sharmaji of the famed composer duo Sharmaji-Varmaji, which composed for Heer Ranjha (1948). His first solo project was the 1953 hit Foot Path, starring Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari in the lead roles.
