Five years ago, when Xiaomi entered the smartphone market India, it popularized the flash sale model. While limited inventory was the real reason behind this way of selling devices, Xiaomi used it to create hype about products. This model endured several generations of Xiaomi and Redmi products in India and is still the most common way of getting a smartphone under these brands.
Besides Xiaomi, many online-first brands in India have adopted this model too. However, as Xiaomi continues to be the leading smartphone in India for several quarters running, it has been overhauling the process and opening up several devices for regular sale after severe criticism from prospective buyers. After recently kicking off open sales for the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Xiaomi India has now initiated the open sale of the Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20 Pro in India.
